A Different View: Crazy Roads

What struck Kevin Porter on his maiden trip to India were the roads and the
traffic. He was sure that he would be involved in at least one accident before
he returned to the US, as he saw cars, buses, bicycles and people navigate
through narrow stretches, a sight not witnessed in his hometown

FREQUENCY OF VISITS TO INDIA: Porter visited India for the first time
in February 2007. He looks forward to visiting India again.

WHAT I LIKE ABOUT INDIA: Though my flight was late by four hours, I
found the driver waiting for me at the airport. I was amazed as it was 1.30am in
India. I would never have expected this while traveling in the US. Throughout my
trip, I experienced wonderful service at each and every point from the drivers,
hotel staff, waiters and merchants. My meeting with our R&D team in Bangalore
was the most wonderful part of my trip to India.

WHAT I DISLIKE ABOUT INDIA: I found the roads to be quite primitive
compared to those that I drive daily at home. Driving in such a massive traffic
was an experience in itself. I had only heard about it but could not believe it
till I actually found myself trapped in such a chaotic state. During my first
ride on Indian roads, I was certain that I would be involved in at least one
accident. Pedestrians cross the road whenever and from where they wish. In case
of slow-moving traffic two wheeler riders do not hesitate in using footpaths or
by lanes to make a way out for themselves.

WHAT I LOOK FORWARD TO IN INDIA: During my first visit, I met many
people in the networking and IT industry. I was surprised at how often I was
asked about what products and solutions my company was building specifically for
the Indian market. I was not under the impression that India had special needs
in this space. After listening to their business needs, I found that the
products and solutions that are needed in India are in line with the needs of
other parts of the world. I believe that the challenges in India are also the
opportunities.

This trip was both educative and enjoyable. I hope during my next visit, I
can take out more time to explore India in a better way.

ONE THING ABOUT INDIA THAT STUCK TO MY MIND: In India horns are used
civilly, whereas in the US, horns are generally used in anger. I was also
surprised and impressed with how the people were able to share the narrow roads
and get to their destinations seemingly safely.
