MUMBAI
FEBRUARY 8, 2007
Amar Babu, former head of Intel India's sales and marketing operation, has
put in his papers after eight years at Intel. He is joining Idea Cellular in
March, in an operations role, likely to head customer services delivery. He will
be based in Mumbai, where Idea is shifting its base (from Pune).
Amar Babu, 41, a veteran of eight years with Intel in India, served as
director, sales and marketing for four years up to 2006. He carried the
designation of managing director for the last of those four years, along with
John McClure (part of Intel's 'two-in-a-box' experiment). Babu served in a
number of roles at Intel; market sources attribute to Babu much of the growth of
Intel in India in recent years, and especially the very strong relationship
Intel built up with the channels. After Babu moved out of the managing director
role in mid-2006, he was expected to move to Intel's corporate headquarters at
Santa Clara, California.
The Aditya Birla-owned Idea Cellular, a rapidly expanding mobile operator
with operations in 11 circles, is about to launch its IPO on February 12. The Rs
2,125 crore IPO will offer Rs 10 shares in a price band of Rs 65-75.
