eSys chalks Linux promotion plans

eSys Distribution, the first vendor to launch a Linux-based PC in the sub Rs 20,000 category, has chalked some inititatives that would popularize this software as an OS. It plans to hold training sessions for customers at its 21 centers. The sessions will be for a day or two and free of cost. Initially, the training would be launched in five cities -- Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and
Bangalore. 

Says eSys India Operations MD and CEO, GS Paul, “We want to popularize Linux as an OS amongst users. We will train our customers on the use of Linux-based applications, and have been working on this initiative for the last six to seven months.” 

It is also bundling of a large number of applications on the Linux platform. It includes a financial accounting package and 60 games, developed by a Delhi-based company.

One of the major reasons for the slow take-off of Linux as an OS has been the lack of applications on the desktop. Of late, there has been a slew of this software-based PC launches by established vendors. However, lowering of prices has been the only initiative in promoting these PCs as an alternative and viable OS for desktops.

eSys had launched its low-priced PC in October last year and received a good response. Paul informs that besides the price point, it has also done well because of the superior quality of the product. The company currently ships over 3,000 PCs per month and between 8,000-10,000 kits per month.
