HCL turns 30

Hindustan Computers Limited (HCL), a global technology and IT enterprise,
turns 30 today.

Founded in 1976, is one of India's original IT 'garage start-ups,' was
the first one to develop the indigenous micro-computer in 1978. The
micro-computer, which was developed at the same time as Apple computer,
virtually gave birth to the Indian computer industry.

With a decade, HCL became the largest IT company in India. Today, HCL claims
to sell more PCs in India than any other brand; it runs Northern Ireland's
largest BPO operation; manages the network for Asia's largest stock exchange
network; designs zero visibility landing systems for aircrafts.

Its range of service offerings span R&D and Technology Services,
Enterprise and Applications Consulting, Remote Infrastructure Management, BPO
services, IT Hardware, Systems Integration and Distribution of technology and
telecom products in India.

In 2001 HCL tied a joint venture with Deutsche Bank. In the same year it also
acquired British Telecom's Apollo's contact center in Belfast, Northern
Ireland.

In 2003 when the company won the largest BPO order from British Telecom--the
largest BPO order ever outsourced to an Indian BPO firm-it also achieved
another landmark: crossed 20,000 employees.

This year, with the intention of expanding its retail presence, HCL
Infosystems set up 'ShopToshiba' in partnership with Toshiba; entered into a
strategic distributor relationship with Nokia; and tied up with Apple to provide
sales and service support for iPods. It also launched India's first segment
specific range of notebook under the brand HCL Leaptops.

With annual revenues of $3.30 billion, the HCL comprises two companies listed
in India--HCL Technologies and HCL Infosystems. Between them, they have 34,000
professionals of diverse nationalities, operating across 16 countries.
