Intel launches Quad Core processor

Intel Corporation today launched its latest offering, Quad Core processors,
to deliver speed and responsiveness for general-purpose servers, workstations,
digital media creation, high-end gaming and other market segments that demand
better performance.

While Quad Core Intel Xeon 5300, addresses the server platforms, Intel Core-2
Extreme processors are targeted at the desktops. Both the versions have been
built with four computing 'brains' inside a single microprocessor.

Addressing the media after launching the processors here, Ramamurthy
Sivakumar, Country Manager, Intel Technology India, said that the launch of the
Quad Core microprocessors would bring new possibilities for science,
entertainment and business segments.

“The new processors have been built-to-suit the existing industry standards
of computer infrastructure and does not require any further enhancement as for
the hardware goes,” he said.

Ramkumar said that the two microprocessors now at 65 nanometers, would bring
down the power consumption and the next step would be to bring the size to 45
nanometers. “Processors built with smaller geometric will reduce the wattage
consumed,” he said.

Part of the work involved in getting the chips ready for the global market
was undertaken at the Digital Enterprise Group (DEG) at Intel India Development
Centre (IIDC) in Bangalore, India.

The DEG undertook significant work related to post-silicon functional
validation, which involves the crucial decision of whether the product is ready
to launch to the markets or not.
