UPS manufacturer Luminous has tied up with Iris Computers for distribution of
their product range in South and West India. This according to Sunil Bhalla,
Director, Luminous Power Technologies, is the first step to increase the
company's presence in the South. "Thus far we have had a considerably low
presence in the South and through this tie-up we hope to garner a greater
customer mind-share here," he informed. Niraj Infotech of Chennai has also
been roped in as a partner in the South to better Luminous market reach.

Indicating that more partners would be signed-up Bhalla said that Luminous
would be selective in choosing their channel partners and sign-up very niche
players to help them reach out effectively to the customers. At present Luminous
has around 4500 channel partners across the country and the company hopes to
increase that number to 6500 by March next year. "By 2009 Luminous is
hoping to have a channel base of 12000 partners. The metros apart we would also
increase focus on the C and D class cities."

Expansion apart, the company hopes to achieve a target turnover of 500 crore
by the end of the next fiscal and Bhalla believes that expansion into the South
would greatly help that endeavor. "The southern region is attracting more
investments not only in UPS business, but also in other IT products as the IT
investments are increasing YOY. We see huge opportunity for the Luminous brand
and by 2009 we hope to reach our target turnover of 1000 crore," he added.

Apart from setting up its own service centres, Luminous plans to train its
channel partners in after sales service, support and also go to market together
with them for their UPS range. "In addition to service, we would train our
partners in installation be it for enterprises or home segments," Bhalla
said.

Meanwhile the company is also contemplating setting up of another
manufacturing unit Himachal Pradesh in addition to the current two to cater to
the needs of the domestic market. A similar unit is likely to come up in China
by the end of January next year to help Luminous cater to the needs of the
export market. As far as domestic market expansion is concerned, Luminous sees
great opportunity in the government and corporate sector. For exports, UAE,
Africa and the APAC are promising regions for the company. "In the first
phase we are looking to expand our presence in these regions and then look at
other markets like US, Europe and Australia," Bhalla said.
