It is normally believed, that channel partners are not very tech savvy; but PN Prasad of Microplus Computers begs to differ. From starting e-groups; to taking charge of the internal and external communication in Confed ITA, Prasad has come a long way. He did his schooling in Panruti and went on to do his MSc in Instrumentation from BITS, Pilani.
THE BEGINNING
Prasad started his career in 1983 with Pragati Computers at Puducherry. He was working as a manager in technical services and got promoted as regional manager. But slowly the entrepreneurial streak emerged in him and Prasad quit his job to start Microplus Computers in 1990. Like any other first time entrepreneur, Prasad also had to undergo an initial phase of finance and manpower management issues. He always wanted to do something different, hence experimented with a lot of new things like manufacturing stabilizers, opening mobile showrooms etc. Prasad quipped, “I always wanted to do things differently. Apart from regular business, I am also into training, mutual funds and trading. It just helps me to broaden my vision and business.”

ON THE ROAD TO SUCCESS
Prasad has always been vocal about problems, which the dealer community faces and has constantly voiced his opinion. With vendors changing their distribution policies, Prasad questions their expectations from partners. He remarked, “In today's time it is difficult for a partner to stay with one vendor, as they keep changing their partnership. If the vendor does not look for long-term association, how can we commit our resources to that vendor? Vendors see your stock lifting capacity and do not pay attention to your technical capabilities. These days most resellers prefer to pick up stocks in the market where prices are lower.”
Prasad played an active role as the President of Confed ITA from 2008—2009 and raised many important issues with vendors. His opinion is that most of the dealers do not have any written agreement with the vendor. Without mincing words, Prasad said, “Any dealer or reseller will have a certificate in their name which is often not renewed. Vendors want to keep their options open and favor those who do big numbers.” Even though most dealers are technically adept, they prefer to be low key. Prasad is of the opinion that to survive in today's time; one has to be abreast with latest technology happenings. He has no qualms in admitting that he is also on a constant learning process and will continue with his quest. Prasad quipped, “One does not stop learning in school or college. You have to constantly upgrade to be in accordance with changing times.”
Apart from work, Prasad is very active in the social circle and constantly networks with his peers and colleagues. He started e-groups to find his batchmates from BITS, Pilani and has successfully found 200 batchmates with whom he fondly shares old memories. Prasad was also instrumental in creation of Confed ITA and founded ITTA-Puducherry. He remarked, “Communication is the key to success and helps to stay in the loop of current affairs. I have also created an e-mail group between vendors and Confed ITA and other associations across India to share issues.”
ACHIEVING WORK LIFE BALANCE
Prasad loves to spend time at home with his wife Alamelu and daughter Ramya, who is pursuing her BE Architecture from NIT, Bhopal. “One gets engrossed in business so much, that family often gets neglected. I try to maintain a work life balance and spend quality time with my family. Since my daughter is away, I look forward to her visits,” remarked Prasad.
Terming technical knowledge as his strength, Prasad is very much aware of his strengths and weakness. He admits that procrastination is a weak point. He said, “Everyone has plus and minuses, but it is important to identify the same. I am constantly working on my weak areas only to become a better human being.” On off days, Prasad loves to watch movies or chill out with friends and family. 2011 marks a new beginning and Prasad wishes to pursue profitable businesses. He is also working with a network of dealers to distribute solutions.
