Delhi-based Modi Peripherals is one of the leading
sub-distributors of north India. It was one of the first few to set up shop in
Nehru Place and give this market the pre-eminence what it enjoys today. Led by
the very respected JP Modi, it has been growing leaps and bounds year after
year.

Surprisingly, business is not what JP Modi likes to talk
whenever I meet him. Rather, he is always eager to talk about the various
philanthropic activities he has been doing over the last couple of years. There
are various things, which he does as a part of the Rajasthan Club, of which he
is a founder member. Based in the capital, this club comprises of mainly
marwaris from Rajasthan who are trying to do their bit for the betterment of the
society.

However, much more than this club, JP Modi is very proud of the
school, which he has been running in his native village in Rajasthan. This
school is meant only for girls where not only is education free, they even get
meals and uniforms without any charge. This is his way of doing his bit for the
betterment of the girl child. In the process, he genuinely gets a feeling of
having done something in life besides pure commerce.

Now, JP Modi is not the only one amongst the channel community
who are contributing in their own way for the society. There are a number of
them doing so quietly. Interestingly, almost all the channel partners who are
doing so are marwaris. They are known for their various charitable activities
and this is something, which others can and should emulate.

On the other hand, a wide majority of the channel community
doesn't believe in indulging in any kind of philanthropic activity. And you
can't blame them also. The kind of margins they are able to make in business
is pretty low, something they always keep cribbing about. They reason that they
are more than willing to do their bit provided they are left with some surplus
at the end of the month.

However, what they are contending is correct but only to some
extent. If they really want to do something, they can do it provided they have
the will to do so. People who are doing their bit also belong to the same
channel community and they also earn the same kind of money.

Take for instance my dear friend Bharat Bhushan of Delhi-based
RR Systems. For the last couple of years, he has been part of an institution,
which runs a free eye hospital in Gurgaon. Not only is the consultation free,
but even operations, if required, are conducted absolutely free of cost. For
Bhushan, it not only means monetary contribution, it also involves giving his
time on Sundays. That's something, which each and every member of the channel
community can easily spare.
