STMicroelectronics has introduced a low-voltage shunt voltage reference that
can provide a precisely controlled output. It is designed for use on computer
motherboards and in set-top boxes, instrumentation, battery chargers,
switch-mode power supplies (SMPS) and battery-operated equipment.
The TS3431 can be used to replace Zener diodes in applications that need
better performance, particularly at low voltages. Using the reference in the
feedback control loop of an SMPS will enable it to generate low voltages, such
as 3.3 or 3V. Other typical applications include shunt or series regulators,
voltage monitors and error amplifiers.
The reference can be programmed with an external resistor bridge to output
any voltage from 1.24V to 24V. It will then hold that voltage with an accuracy
of 2%, 1% or 0.5%, depending on which version the user
chooses.
The part will sink between 400 A and 100mA of current and maintain its
accuracy over the industrial operating temperature range of -40° to +125°C.
It is available in three versions (TS3431, A and B), depending on the
accuracy the user needs. It is available in two packages: SOT23-3L for
space-saving applications or the standard three-pin TO-92. It is priced at $0.12
in quantities of 1K units.
