"We want to keep the GID program healthy"

The recent removal of four resellers from the Genuine Intel Dealers (GID)
program in Chennai was an attempt by Intel to keep the GID scheme healthy.
"The resellers were removed from the GID program only after verifying that
these were indulging in willful malpractices," says Amar Babu, GM,
Channels, South Asia, Intel.

From time to time, Intel looks at GIDs whether they adhere to the rules of
the program; meet critical requirements and do not go against industry
practices. There are legal and security teams within Intel to investigate these
matters and take action.

"There are generic rules that every GID has to follow globally. When
these are flouted, action becomes inevitable," points out Amar who was at
pains to explain that the expelling of four GIDs in Chennai and the raids in
Mumbai on those who were involved in repackaging of processors had nothing in
common and it was only coincidental.

Intel investigating teams found out that processors were being repackaged in
fake Intel boxes in Mumbai. Raids were carried out and fake boxes were seized.
"We had to take this action because branding issues were involved,"
comments Amar.

Intel would continue to assess the performance of GIDs as per global
standards and take suitable action against those involved in illegal activities
like repackaging of its CPUs. A larger team within Intel across South Asia with
legal and security professionals will continue to take decisions on the subject.
