Bangalore: Bangalore-based IT major Wipro has introduced new range of laptops
and desktops that are Restriction of hazardous substances (RoHS) complaint in
the India market. The range of desktops and laptops called Greenware, adhere to
the European Union's RoHS rules that prohibit the use of substances such as
lead, mercury, cadmium and hexavalent chromium. The company has plans to
eliminate polyvinyl chloride and brominated flame-retardants by 2009.
Introducing the new product range, Ashutosh Vaidya, VP Wipro Personal
computing division said that the company was the first in India to introduce
RoHS complaint products in domestic market. "We have made substantial
investment of resources to launch the environmental friendly range of products
as a part of our responsibility towards cleaner environment," he added.
The company has stopped using hazardous materials such as brominated flame
retardants, PVCs and heavy metals like lead, cadmium and mercury that have been
regularly used in computer manufacture so far. "Although in India, there is
no such legislation to phase out RoHS substances in electronic and electrical
equipment, Wipro is the first Indian company to follow the practice. We expect
that other companies too will follow this," said R Kumar, spokesperson from
Greenpeace India. According to him, global PC majors such as IBM, HP and Lenovo
already adhere to RoHS complaint and the products they sell in India are free
from hazardous substances.
Wirpo launched five desktops and three laptops, which are RoHS complaint.
Eventually the plan is to ensure that all desktops and laptops from Wipro
personal computing would be free of hazardous in next six months, said the
company.
